What is Body Dysmorphia?

Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) is a mental health condition where someone becomes preoccupied with perceived flaws in their appearance — flaws that may be minor or not noticeable to others. This can lead to anxiety, shame, and behaviors like frequent mirror checking, camouflaging, or avoiding social situations.

Our Approach

At Tauk Wellness, we create a safe, nonjudgmental space to address the emotional and behavioral patterns that keep BDD going. Our work is rooted in evidence-based care, drawing on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and strategies like Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) to help reduce preoccupation, avoidance, and rituals. Mindfulness may also be integrated, as mindfulness skills can support you in observing thoughts without judgment, reducing rumination, and building self-compassion.  Treatment is always collaborative and paced for your comfort.

Treatment

We start by understanding your experiences and identifying triggers. From there, we build a personalized plan that may include gradually facing feared situations, reducing appearance-related rituals, and developing more balanced, compassionate ways of thinking about your body. Between-session exercises help you integrate skills into daily life, and progress is reviewed regularly to ensure your plan is working for you.

When appropriate for a client’s treatment plan, I collaborate with registered dietitians to address nutrition-related concerns that may be connected to BDD. Tauk Wellness also plans to offer in-house RD services in the future, creating a more integrated approach to care.
